Human hair or synthetic: which wig is right for you

Most guides on this question are written by people who sell one of the two. Both are legitimate answers to different situations, and the more expensive one is not automatically the right one.

What synthetic does well

It holds its style. The shape is set into the fibre. Wash it, let it dry, and it returns to how it was — through humidity, rain and a full day out. In this climate that is not a small thing; it is often the deciding one.

It needs almost nothing. No styling, no blow-drying, minimal handling. On a day when you are tired, it is ready.

It is lighter and cheaper. Both matter, and the price difference is substantial rather than marginal.

The limits: standard synthetic cannot take heat and will melt. It cannot be coloured. And it has a shorter life — daily wear tends to bring frizz at the nape and friction points within a few months, and once that starts it does not reverse.

What human hair does well

It behaves like hair, because it is. It moves, catches light unevenly, and can be worn up, straightened or curled. Nothing synthetic imitates that entirely.

It can be changed. Restyled, cut differently, toned to a new shade. A piece you tire of can become a different piece.

It lasts. One to three years of daily wear with proper care, and considerably longer if worn occasionally.

The limits: it responds to humidity exactly as your own hair does — which means on some days it will go flat or frizz, and you will need to do something about it. It costs more, and it asks for time.

The question that actually decides it

Not budget. Not appearance. How much attention do you want to give it in the morning?

Someone who enjoys styling their hair and wants the freedom to change it will be happier with human hair and would find synthetic limiting. Someone who wants to put it on and leave the house will be happier with synthetic and would find human hair a chore — and an expensive one to neglect.

We ask that question first, before anything about price.

What gives a wig away — and it is not the fibre

People assume synthetic looks fake and human hair looks real. In practice, at conversational distance, three other things give a piece away far more reliably:

A well-matched, correctly thinned, properly cut synthetic beats a badly specified human-hair wig every time.

The questions, in short

Can synthetic be heat-styled?
Only heat-friendly synthetic, within a stated temperature. Standard synthetic melts.
How long does each last?
Daily wear: synthetic four to six months, human hair one to three years.
Does synthetic look fake?
Good synthetic does not. Uniform colour and unvarying shine are what give it away.
Which suits the humidity?
Synthetic keeps its shape when human hair would not.

Where we stand on this

We make bespoke human-hair pieces in our own atelier, so the expensive answer is the one that would suit us. We still recommend synthetic regularly — for a first piece, during treatment, and for anyone who tells us plainly that they do not want to spend time on their hair.

A synthetic wig that gets worn is worth more than a bespoke one that does not.
